Abstract

This dataset contains public and private school locations, names, addresses, phone numbers, construction status, school types, and enrollment figures for school facilities within Prince George's County, Maryland. Public and private educational facilities include all those that offer instruction in one or more grades from kindergarten through primary, secondary, and post-secondary levels.

Purpose

This dataset was developed to provide current Prince George's County, Maryland public and private school information for use by the staff of the Planning Department and the general public.

Update 1

Edit Description: Corrected the following for proposed schools: city values, added ZIP codes, added ‘N/A’ for the phone number, added 'N/A' for school type. Added church-exempt schools.

Update 2

Edit Description: By early summer of 2012, the Prince George’s County Board of Education decided to relocate or combine five schools in the coming school year (2012-2013). Oakcrest Elementary School will close, with its students attending Highland Park Elementary. The Judith P. Hoyer Montessori School will move into the former Oakcrest Elementary building. The John Hanson French Immersion School will move into the G. Gardner Shugart Middle School building. The students of Bradbury Heights Elementary who had been in Shugart Middle School will return to their original school building. Finally, EXCEL Academy Public Charter School will move into the former Matthew Henson Elementary School building. Due to recent information from the PGCPS, all proposed school points have been removed, as they were out of date and not being maintained. A notation has been added to the names of Oakcrest, Hoyer, Hanson, Bradbury Heights, and EXCEL marking their future change in status. These will be updated further prior to the start of school.

Edit Description: Updated the school enrollment data per the September 30, 2013 annual enrollment report. This year the report did not include Utilization values, so these values were calculated as described under the description for the Percent_Utilization field. Note: the following schools have full-day prekindergarten in 2013-2014 - Andrew Jackson Academy, Barnaby Manor Elementary, Bradbury Heights Elementary, Carole Highlands Elementary, Cora L. Rice Elementary, Port Towns Elementary, Suitland Elementary, William W. Hall Academy. Further, the Early Childcare Centers (Chapel Forge, Frances R. Fuchs, and H. Winship Wheatley) have part and full-day prekindergarten classes. An estimation of half of the prekindgarten students being in the full-day classes was used to compute the utilization rate. Other updates include the addition of new schools (Prince George's Community College (John Eager Howard, Skilled Trades Center, and Westphalia Training Center), Chelsea School, Genesis Christian Day School - Clinton, Genesis Christian Day School - Landover), the removal of others (Tabernacle Learning Center, Kiddie Academy of Greenbelt, Genesis Christian Day School - Oxon Hill, Genesis Christian Day School - Temple Hills, Faith Baptist Christian School, Area Offices (Ammendale Road, Gwynn Park, TurnAround Schools, and Highland Park), the relocation of schools, and changes to addresses, ZIP codes, contact numbers, BASELP status, grade levels, and names.

A public school that is nonsectarian, is chosen by parents for their children, and is open to all students on a space available basis. Often some combination of elementary and middle school grades.

Elementary

K_THRU_12_ENROLLMENT

Definition:

Numerical value representing the number of students enrolled in a county public school in grades K through 12, per the annual September 30th enrollment report of the Prince George's County Public School system.

PRE_K_ENROLLMENT

Definition:

Numerical value representing the number of students enrolled in a pre-Kindergarten program at a county public school per the annual September 30th enrollment report of the Prince George's County Public School system.

TOTAL_ENROLLMENT

Definition:

Numerical value representing all grades of students enrolled in a county public school per the annual September 30th enrollment report of the Prince George's County Public School system.

STATE_RATED_CAPACITY

Definition:

A numerical value representing the number of students the Maryland Interagency Committee on School Construction, or its designee, has determined for an individual schools physical capacity to enroll, as cited in the annual September 30th enrollment report of the Prince George's County Public School system.

State Rated Capacity (SRC) is defined by the Maryland State Department of Education and is calculated based on the number of teaching stations in the school and their utilization. SRC applies to the main building and permanent additions. SRC does not include relocatable units.

At the elementary level, SRC is calculated as follows:
Regular classroom (Grades 1-5) - 23 seats
Self-contained special education classroom - 10 seats
Kindergarten classroom - 22 seats
Prekindergarten classroom - 20 seats
Zero-capacity allowances: cafeteria, gymnasium and multi-purpose rooms, computer lab,
art, vocal music, instrumental music, reading resource, science storage and preparation
rooms

At the secondary level, SRC is calculated as follows:
Regular classroom/computer classroom (Grades 6-12) - 25 seats x 85% utilization
Self-contained special education classroom - 10 seats x 100% utilization
Gymnasium (2 classrooms) - 50 seats x 85% utilization
Zero-capacity allowances: computer lab
Teaching stations used for activity rooms, dance studios, weight rooms, science labs, art,
music, technology education, family studies, and business classrooms all count as
teaching stations (25 seats x 85% utilization)
Teaching stations that can be separated by moveable walls or partitions (such as those in
some designed auditoriums) also contribute to capacity (25 seats x 85% utilization)

PERCENT_UTILIZATION

Definition:

A numerical value expressed as a percentage, comparing the total enrollment to the state-rated capacity, as modified by estimation of full-time equivalent students at each school. A value greater than 1 (or 100%) means that the student population exceeds the state-rated capacity at that school.

Full-time equivalent students are counted as 100 percent of students in grades kindergarten through grade five, and 50 percent of students in prekindergarten and preschool because they are half-day programs. No FTE conversion is required at secondary schools.

SCHOOL_YEAR

Definition:

The date of the most recent September 30th annual enrollment report by the PGCPS.
